Bajaj Avenger Street 160
It is the only cruiser bike in the 150cc bikes segment. The Bajaj Avenger 160 grew from the older 150cc bike as larger engine offered slightly better performance and fuel efficiency. Avenger has the soul of Kawasaki Eliminator which was launched in India way before the Avenger. The Kawasaki bike was expensive and thus couldn’t much customers. TVS Apache RTR 160
The one thing that TVS has done good is by keeping the old Apache models in the BS6 era. Here we have the TVS Apache RTR 160 2V with BS6 compliant engine and single channel ABS. It is priced at Rs 1,17,790 ex-showroom, New Delhi.
The Apache 160 2V continues to use the old Apache design that was launched way back in 2014. It features twin LED DRLs on the front with clear glass halogen headlamp. There is LED taillight for better illumination of tail light. It features a single piece seat with flat design making it comfortable for both the rider and the pillion.
The RTR 160 gets new colours with the new update including Matte Red, Matte Blue, Gloss Red, Pearl White, Gloss Black, T Grey and Racing Red.

Hero MotoCorp is revamping their product portfolio and new bikes are coming from their research ad development centre at Jaipur. The home-grown automaker is looking to expand into every segment and even in the 250cc+ segment in the near future. One of their exciting products is present in the 150cc segment which is a new generation extreme.
The Hero Xtreme 160R is a sporty commuter bike from the company which is aimed to take on the like of TVS Apache 160 4V and Bajaj Pulsar NS 160. This bike is the replacement of the old Xtreme 150 and gets bigger engine and more power delivering hair raising performance at an affordable price tag.
Speaking about the colours, Hero Xtreme 160R is available in – Pearl Silver White, Sports Red, Vibrant Blue, Matte Black and Stealth 2.0.
The engine, however, is an old-school unit which comes with only 2-valves as opposed to the TVS and Bajaj offering advanced 4-valve head in their new generation bikes. The programmed fuel injected, air-cooled, single cylinder, 163cc engine pumps out a maximum power 15 bhp at 8500 rpm and a peak twisting force of 14 Nm which arrives at 6500 rpm. By looking at these numbers, we are sure that Hero Extreme is not powerful than the Apache and Pulsar but it has got a lighter kerb weight of just 138.5 kg making it 8.5 kg and 12.5 kg lighter than the Apache 160 4V and Pulsar NS 160 respectively.
This motor is coupled to a 5-speed gearbox which is on the shorter side for crisp city performance and quicker acceleration. Xtreme 160R does 0-60 kmph in claimed 4.7 seconds. If you want to go prowling on the highways, the best cruising speed would be around 80 kmph for stress-free riding. Top speed is estimated to be around 110-115 kmph just like other bikes in the segment.

Speaking about the engine, the bike is powered by a 159.7cc, single cylinder, 4-stroke, air and oil-cooled engine that breaths through a 4-valve head. It is fuelled by RT-Fi fuel injection system that is developed by TVS to provide maximum power and fuel efficiency. This mill pumps out 17.4 bhp of max power at 9000 rpm and a peak torque of 14.73 Nm comes up at 7250 rpm. There is a 5-speed gearbox paired with the engine and is connected via wet multi-plate clutch.
Coming to the performance, the Apache RTR 160 is able to hit 100 kmph in 16 seconds and goes up to a top speed of 115 kmph. The fuel efficiency of the Apache is 45 kmpl in the city limits which increases to about 50 kmpl on the highways. A 12-litre fuel tank can provide a range of nearly 600 km on the highway rides.
The instrument cluster on the bike is fully digital unit and features most of the one might need while on a ride. Only the trip computer is missing from the display but gets lap timer and top speed recorder. The headlight and taillight are both LED units while the turn indicators are halogen bulbs.
The riding posture on the Apache RTR 160 is upright with a slight lean for sportiness. One can easily go on tours on the new Apache 160 4V. It comes with a single-piece, sizable and well-padded seat which can accommodate the rider and pillion comfortably.
The suspension system is comprised of telescopic forks at the front and monoshock at the rear. It is calibrated for delivering a comfortable ride on the city as well as broken section of roads as it absorbs all the undulations and bumps without unsettling the rider.

Bajaj Pulsar N160
Bajaj launched the Pulsar N160 recently as its latest trend-setter in the 150-160cc motorcycle segment. This bike has been launched to replace the ageing Pulsar 150. At present, it is priced at Rs 1.22 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi which is Rs 18,000 more expensive than the Pulsar 150.
In terms of design, the new N160 is based on the Pulsar N250 with a streetfighter stance and bi-projector headlight assembly. Pulsar N160 gets four paint jobs – Caribbean Blue, Racing Red, Techno Grey and Brooklyn Black. It is also the only 150-160cc bike after the R15 V4 to sport a dual-channel ABS system for greater rider safety.
Coming to the engine, Pulsar N160 is powered by a 164.82cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled, 2-valve engine. This is the largest displacement engine in this segment and churns out 15.68 bhp of power at 8750 rpm and 14.65 Nm torque at 6750 rpm. A 5-speed gearbox is attached to the engine via a multi-plate clutch.
Expect the bike to offer great city performance due to flat torque curve that provides good pick-up right from low rpm. In terms of mileage, its twin-spark engine can provide up to 50 kmpl mileage on the highways at steady speeds. It is possible to get over 45 kmpl mileage in real-world conditions. This kind of mileage is expected from a bike of this segment because fuel price are going upwards day by day. A 14-litre fuel tank can deliver a riding range of around 500 km in a single tankful.

Bajaj Pulsar NS 160
Next, we have Bajaj Pulsar NS 160 which is the most powerful sports commuter bike in the 150cc bikes segment. Bajaj has invested a good amount of time and resources on the NS 160. The bike uses the same frame and hardware that its elder sibling, NS 200 uses such as the perimeter frame, headlight unit and fuel tank.
Bajaj bikes stay at the top of any segment when it comes to the power, performance and hardware. Pulsar NS 160 is priced at Rs 1.23 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi which is reasonable for the bike. Bajaj Auto is known to create a new segment of motorcycles and this is where the company was a bit late to enter. Three colours are available on the NS160 – Burnt Red, Metallic Pearl White and Pewter Grey.
Speaking about the engine, the bike gets an oil-cooled motor which will be safer and more reliable over long-distance touring. The fuel injected, single cylinder engine displaces 160.3cc and gets an advanced 4-valve head. The engine did not lose power and torque with the BS6 upgrade. It still pumps out 17.03 bhp of maximum power at 9000 rpm and 14.6 Nm of max torque coming up at 7250 rpm.
However, these numbers are more than the Apache RTR 160 4V but the bike itself is heavier at 151 kg kerb weight. The bike does a 0-100 kmph in about 16 seconds and top speed is near about 115 kmph. On the speedometer, the bike can go up to 120 kmph on downhills.
Moving on to the instrument cluster, the bike uses exactly the similar unit that is seen on the NS 200 motorcycle. You get an analogue tachometer which gives sporty feeling. The LCD screen shows all the basic information like speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer, trip meters and tell-tale lights. In advancement of time, Bajaj should have offered an updated console as well.
On a down side, the bike does not feature LED headlight and continues with halogen bulb. The suspension is telescopic forks up front and monoshock at the rear. The suspension is tuned for good city performance and highways rides. It is an idle 150cc bike for occasional highway hauls and weekend gateways.
Bajaj Pulsar NS 160 is perfect bike for those who cannot afford expensive NS 200. The running cost of the NS 160 is less as it delivers a mileage of around 42 km per litre when compared to NS200’s 35 kmpl. A good blend of style, performance and affordability is what defines Pulsar NS 160.

Yamaha FZ X
Up next, we have the Yamaha FZ X. It is a touring friendly 150cc bike from the house of Yamaha India. It is a bike based on the underpinnings of the Yamaha FZ FI but offers a completely different design language. The FZ X is inspired by the international Yamaha XSR range of bikes with its round LED headlight and stretched fuel tank.
Metallic Blue, Matt Copper and Matt Black are the three colours available on the Yamaha FZ X.

Suzuki Gixxer
Next, we have Suzuki Gixxer which is a spirited performer in the 150cc segment. Just recently, new colours of the bike were launched by the Japanese company to boost the sales of the bike in the Indian market. The BS6 model did not receive any extra feature other than BS6 compliant engine. It is because; the company upgraded the bike just a year before the implementation of BS6 emission norms.
The BS6 engine on the Suzuki Gixxer is a 155cc, single cylinder, air-cooled unit which comes with a 2-valve head. The fuel injected motor delivers a bit lower power and torque figures due to increased emission restrictions. This powerplant churns out 13.4 bhp at 8000 rpm and a torque of 13.8 Nm which peaks at 6000 rpm. A 5-speed gearbox does the reduction duties on the Gixxer.
What bothers us is the high price tag of Rs 1.35 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi. Gixxer gets three paint schemes to choose from – Glass Sparkle Black, Metallic Triton Blue and Pearl Mira Red colour options.
The performance of Gixxer 155 is similar to almost all other 150cc bikes in the segment with 0 to 100 kmph coming up in 16 seconds and the top speed is around 110-115 kmph. Not only the performance, but also the fuel economy of the bike is pretty good at 45 km per litre. You can expect a range of 540 km from the 12-litre fuel tank.
The features include a fully digital instrument cluster which is informative and also comes with a gear position indicator. Apart from this, you get speedometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge and other tell-tale lights. It comes with full LED headlight which properly illuminates the roads in the dark.
The suspension system comprised of 41 mm telescopic forks at the front and monoshock at the rear. Braking department is headed by dual disc brake units at both ends with Bybre callipers. For safer braking, a single-channel ABS comes as standard fitment.

Suzuki Gixxer SF
After the naked streetfighter Suzuki Gixxer, we have fully-faired and sporty Gixxer SF. Suzuki launched the SF version of the 155 Gixxer in India to tackle the monopoly of Yamaha R15 V3 in the 150cc sports bike segment. The new generation Gixxer SF is a proportionate sports bike which only pushed back due to high pricing and low power output.
Suzuki Gixxer SF is the only bike in the price range of 150cc commuter motorcycles. The siting position is upright with a slight lean as clip-on handlebars are higher than its rival R15. You can easily cover long distances with ease and can qualify this bike as sports tourer. The LED headlight offers a good throw and illuminates the road properly in the night. This leads to safer night rides.
Gixxer SF comes in Glass Sparkle Black, Metallic Triton Blue and Pearl Mira Red colour options.
Powering the Suzuki Gixxer SF is an air-cooled, 155cc, fuel injected, single cylinder BS6 engine which comes with only 2-valve head. This engine in the BS6 version develops only 13.4 bhp at 8000 rpm and 13.8 Nm of maximum torque at 6000 rpm. A 5-speed gearbox is attached to the engine which is tuned for city friendly riding and taller 5th gear for stress-free highways stints.
Being a 150cc segment bike, the acceleration of the Gixxer SF is similar to the rest of the bike here with 0-100 kmph timing of around 16 seconds. The top speed is pegged at 120 kmph that is made possible by the aerodynamic fairing. For highways rides, you can cruise at 80-85 kmph for hours between breaks.
As with the comfortability, the bike features a small visor which does not protect the rider from the high-speed windblast. However, if you are riding at 80-85 kmph the windblast is not felt and you can ride tirelessly for hours.
For a sports tourer, an informative instrument cluster is a must. But the Gixxer SF comes with a fully-digital unit that only offers basic information like speedometer. Odometer, trip meters, tachometer, fuel gauge and a gear position indicator. What we expected with the BS6 version is additional details like instantaneous fuel efficiency, average efficiency, distance to empty etc.
There are telescopic forks at the front and monoshock at the rear which offer good high-speed stability and bump absorbing capacity on the bad roads. A fuel economy of around 45 kmpl is enough a fully-faired sports bike. You can ride more than 500 kilometres in a single tankful leading to a fewer fuel stop.

Yamaha MT-15 V2
We are exhausted of all the commuter level 150cc bikes in this segment. Moving on to the premium 150cc bikes segment, we are presented with Yamaha MT-15. It is the first ever MT bike from the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer in India. Other MT models come with rather large engine which are out of budget for majority of the riders. The Yamaha MT-15 V2 is priced at Rs 1.64 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi.
It is minimalist streetfighter motorcycle with least amount of body panels. The handlebar reach is short and provides an upright yet aggressive riding position to the rider which offers better control over the bike. The seat is on the higher side with a height of 810 mm. But with a lighter 138 kg kerb weight, it is easy to manage bike even for the short riders.
There are exclusive colours on the MT 15 V2 to choose from – Cyan Blue, Ice Fluo Vermilion, Metallic Black, Racing Blue and MotoGP Edition.
At the heart of the Yamaha MT-15 is a liquid-cooled, 155cc, single cylinder, fuel injected engine with a 4-valve head. This engine comes with Yamaha’s latest variable valve actuation technology (VVA) which changes the timing and duration of valve opening and closing to enhance power output without wasting the fuel. The BS6 engine now produces about 1 bhp and 0.8 Nm torque less than the BS4 spec engine. Now you have to settle with 18.23 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 13.9 Nm torque at 8500 rpm.
This engine is paired to a 6-speed transmission with shorter gearing. The light kerb weight of 138 kg and short gearing helps MT-15 to hit 100 kmph in about 11 seconds making it quicker than the R15 V3. However, the top speed of the bike is lesser than the R15 with estimates of 130 kmph.
What we were looking at the lower 150cc levels is resent here. A fully digital instrument cluster comes with high level of information to the rider. You get a speedometer, a tachometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, real-time fuel efficiency, average fuel consumption, distance to empty, gear position indicator and attractive VVA signature which comes up after 7000 rpm. Like we have seen in a couple of bikes and scooter, we feel the absence of Bluetooth connectivity feature on the MT-15. This feature might come in the near future as more manufacturer starts offering the same.
The shiny golden USD fork at the front and a linked-type monoshock at the rear are tuned to provide a stiffer ride as the bike is more focused on handling and high-speed stability. The deltabox frame from the R15 is a boon for the corner carvers as bike completely annihilates the corners with the help of grippy tyres and well-sorted dynamics.
Braking performance comes from a 282 mm disc brake at the front and 220 mm disc at the rear with a single-channel ABS for enhanced safety to the rider. Yamaha MT-15 is a cool urban streetfighter at a reasonable price tag. The pillion seat is bit small and hence, it cannot be qualified as a touring bike. However, if you love to tour alone, then MT-15 V2 can be the best option.

Finally, we came to the most expensive 150cc bike in our list of best 150cc bikes in India. Yamaha R15 was first launched in India in 2008 to overthrow the Bajaj Pulsar 180 and 220. However, in due course of time, R15 attracted a special breed of rider who love to scratch their knees around the corners. It was the most expensive and highly advanced motorcycle to the Indian riders back then.
R15 V4 comes with a host of latest technologies and features such as Variable Valve Actuation technology (VVA) which is usually seen on the 1000cc race bikes and high-end performance cars. Yamaha R15 V4 is available in many paint schemes which are exclusive to it – Metallic Red, Dark Knight, Racing Blue, Metallic Grey, Anniversary Edition and MotoGP Edition.
For upgrading to the BS6 emission norms, more restrictions became mandatory and bike lost power.
