The fuel efficiency is the main reason why people stick to the 150cc segment as they offer up to 50 km per litre and affordable for daily commuting. Priced at Rs 1.35 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi, the Hornet is priced on a higher side for what it is offering. It has entered the territory of TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 as they are priced only about a few thousand rupees.

Honda Hornet 2.0

Honda Hornet 2.0 is a completely new model for the Indian market which is derived from the International model of Honda CB 190R motorcycle. While everyone was waiting for new Hornet 160R, Honda was brewing something else altogether. As the name suggest, Honda is not a 200cc bike but a new generation of the Hornet brand.

Honda Hornet 2.0 is currently one of the beefiest looking streetfighter bikes in India. It got shiny golden Upside-Down Forks (USD) which are sourced from Showa suspensions. The bike gets muscular fuel tank with aggressive tank shrouds which are aerodynamically designed for better air dissipation. Lighting on the new Hornet 2.0 is complete LED units. The headlight, taillamp, turn indicators, all are LEDs which is a welcome addition.

Hornet 2.0 is powered by an air-cooled, PGM-Fi fuel injected, 184.4cc, single cylinder engine with a 2-valve head. This motor churns out 17.1 bhp of maximum power at 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 16.1 Nm which comes at 6000 rpm. The engine is mated to a, sigh, 5-speed gearbox, which should have been a 6-speed unit for better highway ride quality. If you look at the engine construction, it is an old-school engine tuned to compliant with BS6 emission norms.

The power and torque are not that great on the paper at least, but out on the road, new Hornet 2.0 performs as good as a 200cc bike. The main reason behind this is the low kerb weight of just 142 kg and impressive low and mid-range torque delivery. Honda Hornet 2.0 has 120 bhp per ton power to weight ratio which offers excellent performance, flickability and dynamics.

Coming to the performance front, the Hornet 2.0 can hit 100 kmph from standstill in about 12 to 13 seconds and goes up to a top speed of 120 to 125 kmph. Not only this, the PGM-Fi fuel injected engine also deliver great fuel efficiency of about 45 km per litre. The 12 litres fuel tank can take you up to 540 km in a single tankful. This level of fuel efficiency is required to bypass the ill effects of rising petrol prices.

Feature-wise, the Hornet 2.0 comes with a fully-digital negative LCD instrument console which looks smart but do not have full array of information. There is a speedometer, odometer, tachometer, trip meters, battery voltmeter, fuel gauge, and gear position indicator. You also get a console brightness adjuster with 5 steps. Finally, the bike gets an Engine kill switch for added convenience and Hazard light switch for added visibility in poor visibility conditions.

The suspension setup is comprised of golden USD forks up front and monoshock at the rear. The suspension is a bit stiffer to provide better high-speed stability and cornering ability. There is a single-channel ABS accompanying dual disc brake setup with front rotor of 276 mm and 220 mm rear rotor. Braking performance is incredible thanks to the Nissin callipers.

TVS Apache RTR 180

Now, let’s move to the next and final bike on this list of best 180cc bikes in India. It is TVS Apache RTR 180 BS6. Just recently, TVS updated the old model of Apache with new paint schemes and a couple of extra features. The old model of Apache RTR makes up good sales numbers for the Chennai based manufacturer and thus, the company chose to update it with new features and a tweaked engine.

To counter this, company sold both new and old bikes together for many years until the BS6 emission norms were kicked in. TVS did not launched the 180cc Apache to the new design language of the 160 4V and 200 4V. Apache RTR 180 now gets RT-Fi fuel injection for real throttle feel and enhanced fuel efficiency.

Powering the Apache RTR 180 is same old 2-valve, air-cooled, 177.4cc, single cylinder engine. This power plant now develops more power of 16.8 bhp at 9000 rpm and 15.5 Nm of peak twisting force coming up at 7000 rpm. There is a 5-speed gearbox attached to this engine which is short geared and offers insane acceleration and mid-range power.

The bike is held together by a double cradle synchro stiff chassis which is designed and developed with TVS’ immense track racing experience. There are a pair of TVS Remora tyres which provides excessive grip on the roads and take on the corners like a boss. The grippy tyres also lead to better acceleration and braking.

The Apache RTR 180 can do 0 to 100 kmph sprint in about 13 seconds which is good for the bike with old engine technology. Estimated top speed of this bike is around 120 kmph. If ridden sanely, Apache 180 can also deliver good fuel efficiency too. The RT-Fi fuel injected engine can deliver up to 40-42 km per litre. A range of 500 km can be expected from a single tank of fuel.

Moving on to the features, the new Apache RTR 180 2022 now comes fitted with a fully digital instrument cluster lifted straight from the RTR 200. The meter displays all the important features such as speedometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, 0-60 kmph recorder, top speed recorder, gear position indicator, turn-by-turn navigation and more. There is Glide Through Traffic technology which makes it possible to glide through the traffic without twisting the throttle, you only have to let go off the clutch and the bike will move at a constant speed without stalling the engine.

In the suspension department, you will get to see telescopic forks at the front and gas-charged twin shock absorber at the rear. The suspension is tuned for stability around the corners and at high speeds. You can ride through the bad roads as well without unsettling the bike or the rider. A single piece seat offers more space for the rider and the pillion. Braking performance comes from 270 mm front disc and 200 mm rear disc brake with 2-piston and 1-piston callipers respectively. There is a single-channel super moto ABS on offer.

There are new LED headlights with LED DRLs along with new design of LED tail-lights which gives the bike a much needed makeover. The price of 2022 TVS Apache RTR 180 is Rs 1,31,000 ex-showroom, New Delhi which is slightly on the higher side. RTO tax and Insurance will take the price up even further which is normal for all two-wheelers. With the new update, one can say that Apache RTR 180 has become a classic race machine.

The next bike in 180cc segment is the Honda CB 200X is an urban explorer bike from Honda offers nothing substantially extra over what we get from a much cheaper Hero Xpulse 200. The price at which Honda CB 200X is available is Rs 1.47 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi. It is a beefed-up Hornet 2.0 with fairing and higher seat that is good only for short weekend getaways.

Honda CB 200X is built on the platform of the Honda Hornet 2.0 and uses all the components of the former machine such as engine, chassis, swing-arm, suspension and brake units and much more. Now moving on to the changes on the CB 200X. you get a raised handlebar for sitting completely upright. There is a half-fairing with taller visor which is designed to deflect high-speed wind-blast on the highway rides.

The ergonomics of the CB 200X is also perfect, thanks to the thicker seat with balanced foam for allowing the rider to stay on the saddle for long time. It gets a taller seat height of 810 mm which is good more most riders but some shorter riders might face problems with the higher saddle especially in the city traffic.

Honda CB 200X is destined as an Urban Explorer which make sit good for short to medium riders and not for ultra-long-distance rides. The ground clearance stays at 167 mm which is sufficient for highway touring, but if you take the bike on off-road trails, the things might look different. The 200X gets dual-purpose tyres which are capable of offering grip on the roads as well as off-road surfaces. But without longer travel suspension and lack of higher ground clearance, the whole point just misses out.

Coming to the engine, the Honda motorcycle for urban touring is packed with a 184.4cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke, 2-valve SOHC engine that is fed by PGM-Fi fuel injection system. This simple old-school yet refined mill belts out 17 bhp of power at 8500 rpm and 16.1 Nm twisting force at 6000 rpm and is connected to a 5-speed gearbox via a wet multi-plate clutch.

With added fairing and other hicks and nicks, the weight of the bike is increased by 5 kilos and now the kerb weight stands at 147 kg. This is pretty light for a 180cc motorcycle and the power to weight ratio is on-par with competition. This makes it nimbler in the city streets while tackling the dense traffic. The riding posture and good wind-protection does make is a bike to take out on the highways, but there are other better and more value-for-money options are present in the Indian market.

In terms of features, the Honda CB200X gets a fully digital instrument cluster with gear position indicator, brightness adjustments and battery voltage gauge. There is no trip computer and range indicator which is an eye-sore for a bike in this category. It gets a full LED headlight, tail-light, and turn indicators which is a welcome touch by Japanese bike maker. A pair of knuckle guards with integrated turn indicators further enhances the look and functionality of the bike.

Kawasaki W175

The latest launch in the 180cc segment is the Kawasaki W175. It is a completely retro motorcycle targeted to the riders looking for a classic bike for long rides. After running for years in the international market, Kawasaki finally launched the retro bikes in India from a price of Rs 1.47 lakh.

It comes in two colour options – Ebony and Candy Persimmon Red. For the Red colour, you have to pay Rs 1.49 lakh. The prices are ex-showroom New Delhi. The red colour variant gets blacked-out rims while the black variant is offered with chrome rims.

Speaking about the design, the W175 gets a round-shaped halogen reflector unit, halogen turn indicators and halogen tail-lamp unit. There is a teardrop fuel tank with 3D emblem on the top variant. A single-piece flat seat is provided for long riding comfort. The pillion grab rail is also a single bar which looks retro but is practical. Rims are spoke units for making it a charm of yesteryears.

Coming to the engine, this old-school bike comes fitted with an air-cooled, 2-valve, single-cylinder, 177cc engine that makes 12.8 bhp of power and 13.2 Nm of torque. There is a 5-speed gearbox that transfers power to the rear wheel via a chain drive. The chain-drive is exposed like modern bikes.

The instrument cluster on the Kawasaki W175 is digital-analogue unit packed into a single-pod unit. There is an analogue speedometer and an LCD screen for get of the information. Nothing fancy is present and it has the elegance of a retro bike.

A pair of telescopic fork is attached to the double-cradle frame at the front and twin shock absorbers are present at the rear. Ride quality is expected to be fine for daily needs.
