Ather Energy is a Bangalore-based electric vehicle start-up with one strong and well-researched and developed product in their portfolio. The Ather 450 is India’s best and technologically advanced electric scooter with features that are not available in the market.
In the beginning, there were two products from Ather – 340 and 450. Due to low demand of the Ather 340, it was discontinued and the company focused its resources on new variants of the 450 itself. Apart from this, the Ather 450 spawned another high end model called the 450X which offers more range.
Ather 450X is one of the most reliable electric scooter on sale in India and it is expected to achieve even high sales number in the coming times. The company is setting up another production facility to tackle the rising demand of their electric scooter. Let’s dive into the details of the Ather scooters.
Ather have launched the third generation of the 450X electric scooter in India with higher range and better features. The 450 is available in two variants – 450X and 450 Plus. Ather 450X is priced at Rs 1.57 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi while the cheaper and more affordable 450 Plus is available to purchase for Rs 1.36 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.
The difference between the Plus and X is of performance and range with 450X offering much higher range than the 450 Plus. Speaking about the performance, the enthusiasts are going to like the snappier 450X as it gets a powerful motor and exclusive Warp mode.
Over the 450 Plus, the 450X comes with software upgrade that offers quicker acceleration times that makes the scooter feel like a performance machine. However, the top speed is still restricted at 80 kmph to ensure that practical riding range is extracted from the electric scooter.
Coming to the powertrain of the Ather 450X, there is a chassis mounted permanent magnet electric motor which sends power to the rear wheel via a belt drive system. This motor is rated for a maximum power output of 6.2 kW while the continuous power output is 3.3 kW. In the 450X, the peak torque is rated at 26 Nm while the 450 Plus gets 5.4 kW of maximum power and 22 Nm of peak torque.
Performance-wise, the 450X hits 40 kmph in just 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 80 kmph in the Sport and Wrap mode. A lithium-ion battery pack has a total charge capacity of 3.7 kWh out of which only 3.24 kWh is usable providing a real-world range of around 105 km in the city riding conditions. In the Ather 450 Plus, the usable capacity drops to 2.6 kWh and it offers a real-world range of 85 km. The acceleration from 0 to 40 kmph is timed at 3.9 seconds for the Ather 450 Plus.
This battery pack is undetachable and supports fast charging via public fast chargers as well as Ather Grid. You can get the battery charge to 80% in just 1-hour from a fast charger while at home charging, 80% battery is juiced up in 5 hours and 40 minutes via a home charger that comes bundled with the electric scooter.
Ather 450 Plus and 450X offers very low running cost and it is a great machine to ride in the city when compared to any other petrol scooter. The high petrol price is the reason more people are choosing the electric scooters and Ather 450X is gaining popularity among the youth.
The Ather is not much of a practical electric scooter as it offers cramped riding posture, high footboard and small seat. Features that make it practical are large 22-litre under-seat boot space, a 7-inch full colour touchscreen display with all the information regarding the scooter. There is inbuilt navigation system supported by an eSIM. The company provides over-the-air software updates to the instrument cluster.
One can connect their smartphone to the cluster via Bluetooth on the 450X and have access to music and mobile notifications as well as full map-based navigation. This feature is not available in the 450 Plus.
The braking department is handled by disc brakes on both ends with combined braking system helping in maintain proper balance under hard braking. At the front, you get a 200 mm disc brake unit while a 190 mm unit does the job at the rear.
Ather 450X absorbs the bumps with the help of telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock suspension at the rear. This setup is well-balanced for aiding in all kinds of speeds and road undulations that one might counter in the city limits.
Ather is offering 3-year warranty on the 450 Plus and 450X scooters, 3-year warranty on the lithium-ion battery pack as well as 3-year warranty on the home charger unit.
