Back in 2016, the Indian market welcomed the Datsun redi-Go with open but tentative arms. The dual-tone seats, whilst decent in terms of their comfort, will not be winning any awards for their lateral support. You will still notice them because Datsun has cleverly integrated an intriguing-looking designer motif onto them. The redi-Go’s interior is a fairly practical place to be, with more than enough storage spaces for your knick-knacks and dedicated spots to keep your mobile phone and bottles/cups. In terms of luggage-carrying capacity, the redi-Go’s 222-liter boot can be expanded to 514 liters if you fold away the rear seats.

For those seated in the back, headroom and legroom are decent, even though having three adults in there is not something we wouldn’t recommend. The large windows of the redi-Go mean that the cabin feels quite airy, though the design of the front seats restricts the forward view of the rear occupants.

If you really want to buy a brand-new Alto, it’s better to go the route of the K10. With the ‘K10’ suffix, the most affordable nameplate in Maruti Suzuki’s stable becomes the best version of itself. Compared to its now-aging 800 sibling, the latest Alto K10 is built on Maruti’s new Heartect platform. Given its punchier powerplant and improved internals, this will be the ideal small car for many Indians who are on the lookout for a new car under 5 lakhs.

Unlike the Alto 800 and depending on your budget, the new Alto K10 comes in multiple flavors. Moreover, its exterior can be painted in one of the following colors: Metallic Granite Grey, Metallic Sizzling Red, Premium Earth Gold, Metallic Silky Silver, Metallic Speedy Blue, and Solid White.

The overall styling has also gone a major update, with the front fascia looking sportier and more youthful.

The sweptback headlamps may not be the suavest unit ever, but the expansive honeycomb main grille adds to the car’s overall stance. In fact, the honeycomb design is carried over to the wheel covers found on the petite 13-inch wheels. The car remains a simplistic one with almost no extraordinary flair. However, the overall footprint of the Alto K10 has turned out to be substantial enough, though the oversized wheel arches look out of place.

At the back, the new model gets a much-pronounced rake in its windscreen, squared tail lamps, a slightly sculpted bumper, and a ‘K10’ moniker. Whether more youngsters migrate to the new Alto K10 or not remains to be seen, but the car has certainly become better.

The interior of the new Alto K10 is not going to change your mind if you thought it will be upmarket and quality-led in its feel. After all, this is still a budget-friendly city car from Maruti Suzuki. You will find more than your fair share of hard & scratchy but durable materials on many of the surfaces. While there’s a lot of uninspiring grey trim in the K10’s cabin, these are supplemented by shinier bits around the AC vents, infotainment screen, steering wheel & door handles.

The dual-tone seats do liven up the interior a bit as well, whilst the greenhouse area is big enough to not cause visibility issues. Because the new model sits higher off the ground, ingress and egress have become easier, while most passengers will be happy with the amount of headroom on board. The seats are alright, but you might want to stretch out once in a while on long road trips.

Practicality has been boosted now thanks to the larger 214-liter boot and handy cupholders in front of the gear lever. There’s also a rear parcel shelf, bottle holders in the door bins, and another cubby under the center console. The interior of the new Alto K10 is a more livable space for sure, and more customers will find it to their liking than not.

4. Datsun Go

In the 2010s, Japanese automaker Datsun was fixing its sights on India as its next big market. To that effect, the first car that the company introduced here in 2015 was the Datsun Go. Even if starts off at a very inviting price point, even the higher trim levels of the Datsun Go aren’t what one would call expensive. Depending on your taste, the Go can be had with exterior shades such as Vivid Blue, Ruby Red, Sandstone Brown, Bonze Grey, Crystal Silver, and Opal White.

The Datsun Go’s exterior design will definitely not go down in the history books as one of the most memorable. Having said that, it’s definitely not one to offend anyone either. The Go is a bigger car than the Alto K10, as it boasts more length, width and wheelbase. This is clearly evident when you view it from the outside. For those that want a pocket-friendly hatchback but diverge from cars with a smaller footprint, then Datsun has you covered.

On the styling front, the Go has a slightly smaller main grille than the redi-Go. Despite that, it still gets a shiny metallic accent around the grille and a similar honeycomb pattern in between. The headlamps might be large in size and slightly angular in design, but they aren’t going to invoke any particular emotion in you. The front bumper is better-styled, helped by some sharp contours and vertical LED DRLs.

The side profile of the Datsun Go is pretty tame, with the main saving grace being a stylized rear-haunch design and 14-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The rear of the Go comes with a stylish chrome strip on the mildly-sculpted bootlid, boxy tail lamps, and a pretty sporty-looking bumper. For the most part, the Datsun Go’s exterior styling isn’t going to turn heads.

Compared to the first model, the facelifted Go’s cabin feels far more spacious and better designed. Not only are the seats themselves better and feel more supportive, but the knee room for rear passengers also seems to have been improved as well. The so-called “Anti-Fatigue” seats actually provide enough comfort if you are just puttering around town, though they feel lackluster on longer trips.

Since the car sits quite high, getting in and out of the Go will be easy for most people. The driving position is actually quite nice, especially with the easy-to-read dials and the convenient positioning of the gear shifter. Being a Datsun, you will not find any premium materials in this cabin, which is to be expected considering its pricing. However, the automaker has gone to the lengths of inserting some piano black and silver finish to make the interior feel less cheap, though the fake carbon-fiber inserts just feel very tacky.

The Datsun Go does feature a glovebox, a couple of cupholders & usable front door pockets, but that’s about it for in-cabin storage. If you compare this to the old model, the interior of the new Datsun Go definitely comes across as an improvement. On a side note, you will still be subjected to loads of road and suspension noise.

Under the bonnet of the Datsun Go is a 1.2-liter three-banger that’s available in two states of tune depending on the transmission. In its 5-speed manual avatar, the motor is capable of 67 horsepower. On the other hand, if you opt for the CVT gearbox, the same engine outputs 76 horsepower. Irrespective, the torque figure remains unchanged at 104Nm.

In an ideal world, the Datsun Go can achieve a Vmax of around 155 kph. Getting from naught to 100 kph will take upwards of 13 seconds. While its apparent SUV silhouette might be appealing to many, once you get up close, things don’t work that well for the S-Presso.

The overall styling is a bit iffy, with awkward proportions that make don’t exactly work in its favor. The tall stance of the S-Presso is enhanced by its short overhangs, squared-off wheel arches, bulging fenders, and an almost-flat roofline. Meanwhile, the front fascia looks quite bold thanks to the large headlamps and a striking grille pattern. Not to mention the fact that the front bumper looks remarkably similar to the one seen in the Mahindra Scorpio.

The front end does come with LED DRLs and a faux skid plate for that SUV-like demeanor. Around the sides, there’s not much to look at apart from the difference in elevation between the front & rear door handles and a thin veneer of black cladding below the doors. The only things to comment on when it comes to the rear of the S-Presso are its taillights with LED running elements, static reflectors on either side, and an all-black bumper.

Given how high it is, you will not have any trouble getting in or out of the S-Presso. The doors also open wide enough, though they don’t feel all that hefty. On the flip side, the front seats aren’t lacking in lateral or under-thigh support. The seats at the back may lack the right degree of squab, but those seated there will not be complaining about headroom. Your eyes will be drawn towards the Mini-inspired center console design, though the execution is far from premium in its look and feel.

While the amalgamation of the instrument cluster and infotainment system might be liked by a few, others will immediately dislike it. If you really need a 7-seater on a tight budget, then you are looking at a Datsun Go+. It will seat its occupants reasonably well sans a torturous experience. On the colors side of things, the Go+ can be had in shades that include Ruby Red, Bronze Grey, Sunstone Brown, Vivid Blue, Blade Silver, and Opal White.

Viewing it from the front, there’s little to distinguish the Go+ from its Go hatchback stablemate. Even though it looks like an enlarged version of the Go hatchback, the Go+ employs three rows of seats. While it may not be as roomy as a Toyota Innova or Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the Datsun Go+ has an interior that is fairly practical and roomy. With 347 liters of luggage-carrying capacity after folding down the last row, there’s enough cargo space to make this a pretty usable family car.

The cabin of the Datsun Go+ doesn’t get adjustable headrests, which means that safety is not the best. In typical Datsun fashion, the Go+ is equipped with ”Anti-Fatigue” seats that are not far from being some of the better seats in budget cars. While these seats may not be the best in the world, the cabin itself is roomy enough to seat at least four adults. 10. Tata Tiago

It might be the most affordable Tata car presently on sale in India, but the Tiago’s reputation often precedes it. While it may not be the fastest or the most spacious car in its segment, the Tata Tiago is absolutely the safest small hatchback in the country. With the first avatar being launched in 2016, the existing facelifted model has witnessed a fair amount of success. Even though it has the highest starting price among all the cars here, the Tiago is indeed a good bet.

Unlike most of the cars on this list, the Tata Tiago has a dizzying number of variants/trims. It’s almost impossible for customers to not find what they are searching for. On the flip side, there are only five exterior colors for you to pick from – Midnight Plum, Flame Red, Arizona Blue, Opal White, and Daytona Grey.

Tata Tiago – Exterior

Even though it has been over 6 years since it was first unveiled, the Tata Tiago remains a modern design. This is only helped by the fact that the auto major gave it an incremental facelift not that long back. The front of the hatchback is straddled with a stylish chrome-laden grille which also sports the brand’s distinctive Tri-Arrow motif. Meanwhile, the projector headlamps sit right beside and gel well with the grille.

Further down, the front bumper signature LED DRLs that sit in a larger housing that also features chrome garnished fog lamps. The side profile of the Tiago gets chrome-finished door handles, slightly-bulging fenders, and two-tone 15-inch alloy wheels. The back of the Tata Tiago gets a small but sporty spoiler, minimalistic yet stylish tail lamps, a two-tone bumper, and a chrome strip on the bootlid. There is subtlety and restraint in the Tiago’s styling, but it’s far from a boring design.

Tata Tiago – Cabin and Practicality

Before you even enter the cabin of the Tiago, you will notice the same Tri-Arrow motif on the seats. However, dissimilar to some of its rivals, this interior doesn’t look or feel as roomy. Those seated in the back will find their heads rather close to the roof, while overall leg space is just about adequate for medium-size adults. Speaking of which, you would not want to fit more than two people on the back bench of this Tata.

Thankfully, the seats are fairly good in terms of their comfort, and even their under-thigh support is decent. Another positive of the Tiago’s cabin comes from its acceptable levels of materials and design. The dual-tone interior and its use of gloss black finish on select touchpoints further add to the appeal. The Tiago’s 242-liter boot is just about decent, with a few useful storage spaces located between the front seats.

Tata Tiago – Engine and Gearbox

Sitting under the bonnet of the Tiago is Tata’s Revotron three-cylinder engine. This 1.2-liter unit has been designed to run on petrol or CNG, with the latter returning an official 26.49 km/kg. In its petrol-only guise, the motor turns up with around 85hp and 113Nm of maximum torque, while its mileage hovers around 19 kpl. In case you are wondering, the Tiago CNG develops 72hp and 95Nm of torque. Your gearbox options include a manual and an AMT, both 5-speed units.

As pointed out earlier, there are cars on this list that are priced above 5 lakhs. However, these are also some of the best examples in the market. In case your budget can get higher, then the likes of the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, or Renault Kwid will make for very good urban runabouts.

Meanwhile, the Datsuns and even the S-Presso are the way forward if you want a lot of car for not a lot of money.
